Oscar Wilde - Sonetto: avvicinandomi all'Italia - 1881

Poesie scelte: OSCAR WILDE, Sonnet on approaching Italy (Sonetto: avvicinandomi all'Italia), Poems, 1881.

Giunsi alle Alpi: l'anima mia ardeva,
Italia, mia Italia, al tuo nome:
E quando uscii dal cuore della montagna
E vidi la terra agognata della mia vita,
Risi come chi ha conquistato un gran trofeo;
E meditando la tua stupenda fama
Scrutai il giorno, finché segnato di ferite di fiamma
Il cielo turchese divenne oro brunito.
Ondeggiarono i pini come la chioma di una donna,
E nei frutteti ogni frasca intrecciata
In scaglie di sbocciante spuma si sfaldò;
Ma quando seppi che lontano, a Roma,
In vincoli obbrobriosi un secondo Pietro languiva,
Piansi davanti al paese tanto bello.

---

I reached the Alps: the soul within me burned,
Italia, my Italia, at thy name:
And when from out the mountain's heart I came
And saw the land for which my life had yearned,
I laughed as one who some great prize had earned:
And musing on the marvel of thy fame
I watched the day, till marked with wounds of flame
The turquoise sky to burnished gold was turned.
The pine-trees waved as waves a woman's hair,
And in the orchards every twining spray
Was breaking into flakes of blossoming foam:
But when I knew that far away at Rome
In evil bonds a second Peter lay,
I wept to see the land so very fair.
